Key Questions Answered
In September 2024, Starlink initially told Brazil's regulator Anatel that it would not comply with a court order to block the social media platform X until its frozen bank accounts were released. The dispute arose after the Brazilian Supreme Court suspended X for failing to appoint a local legal representative. Starlink later reversed its position and agreed to enforce the ban, after which the court lifted the account freezes.
In February 2026, Starlink terminals used by Russian forces on the battlefield were deactivated following collaboration between Ukraine and SpaceX. Ukrainian officials worked on developing a verification system, or whitelist, to identify authorised terminals and block unauthorized devices, which successfully disrupted Russian military communications.
Starlink attracted scrutiny in India in December 2024 after authorities seized satellite equipment in two separate cases. One device was found aboard a vessel intercepted in connection with a suspected $4.2 billion methamphetamine shipment, and a Starlink dish was also recovered during a search operation in Manipur where militants were suspected of using it. Elon Musk subsequently stated that Starlink's satellite beams were switched off over India and had never been active there.
