The previous biometric lock primarily controlled fingerprint, iris, and OTP-based authentication, but the Aadhaar number itself remained unlocked. With the new Aadhaar lock feature, users can lock their actual Aadhaar number so that any verification attempts using it will fail.
After locking the Aadhaar number, a 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) can be generated through authorized channels and used for necessary authentications, allowing users to complete tasks without revealing their actual Aadhaar number.
To lock Aadhaar via the official mAadhaar App, log in using your PIN, go to the Security option, select Virtual ID and Aadhaar Lock, and then choose Aadhaar Lock. Agree to the terms, enter your VID, complete the registered mobile number OTP verification, and finish Face Authentication if required.
