Key Questions Answered

In 2019, laborers extracting gravel from the Danube River in Austria discovered over 500 iron rods dating back approximately 2,200 years. Weighing over a metric ton in total, this hoard is considered Europe's largest discovery of Iron Age iron.

Researchers found a total of more than 500 iron rods, with 193 completely intact and 307 found in pieces. Each rod measures roughly 28.5 centimeters long, weighs an average of 2 kilograms, and features sharpened ends for easy transport.

Researchers believe the iron was being transported by boat before sinking in an ancient accident, completely rejecting the theory that it was thrown into the water as part of a ritual. The abundance of iron suggests it could have made about 500 swords or 8,000 nails.
