Key Questions Answered

Marketplaces are wary because AI agents bypass the traditional search page where brands pay for sponsored listings and where consumers discover products. Since agents compare items across multiple platforms before recommending a choice, their rise could threaten the value of search pages, ad revenues, impressions, and valuable behavioural data.

A September 2026 study by FTA Global tested 50 Indian ecommerce sites across 10 categories and found an average Agent Readiness Score of just 43 out of 100. While real AI agents successfully completed about 80% of tasks, they faced major hurdles on sites where required answers were unclear, product prices and details were missing from server-side HTML or schemas, or JavaScript failed to load properly.

Industry experts expect retail media to shift from buying keyword placements and sponsored shelf slots to competing for consideration inside AI-mediated recommendations. Because AI agents optimize for user outcomes rather than the highest bidder and do not scroll or click banner ads, brands will need to focus on commerce APIs, paid catalogue access, and becoming machine-legible.
