Sunil Gavaskar stated that Hardik Pandya is irreplaceable and warned that India tends to get carried away trying to find a direct replacement. Instead, he advised the team to look for players who can perform different roles and strengthen the bowling attack.
Gavaskar recommended that India should play at least four specialist bowlers, using all-rounders for the fifth and sixth bowling options who can also contribute with the bat. He warned that prioritizing a deep batting lineup down to number eight weakens the bowling attack and leaves the team vulnerable.
Gavaskar highlighted Naman Dhir as an example of a player who can fulfill a different role by contributing with both bat and ball, noting his unbeaten knock in the series decider against the West Indies. He also mentioned Axar Patel as an all-rounder capable of bowling his full quota of four overs.
