Key Questions Answered

According to sources cited by Israel's Channel 12, Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami told interrogators that his actions were a retaliation for the war in Gaza and that he wanted to die as a martyr. However, UAE authorities have not publicly confirmed this motive and are continuing their investigation.

Despite suffering serious injuries from a crash axe attack by the co-pilot, Indian captain Smit Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers, crew members, and two off-duty Flydubai pilots travelling as passengers then rushed forward to restrain al-Hammami, allowing the flight to divert and land safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

The incident highlighted that while reinforced cockpit doors are designed to keep cabin occupants out, they also create a barrier that prevents outside intervention when a threat originates from inside the flight deck. This dynamic made it initially difficult for others to help until the injured captain managed to open the door.
