- •CNN News18 has obtained numerous videos detailing the violent protests at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, Punjab.
- •The footage is being analyzed to reconstruct the sequence of events, from initial student mobilization to escalating vandalism, arson, and clashes with police.
- •The investigation aims to identify individuals involved, track the escalation of violence around university buildings, and examine interactions between police and protesters.
- •The videos may also shed light on alleged involvement of outsiders in the campus unrest.
Key Questions Answered
Protests broke out following a viral social media message alleging that a female student had been assaulted or raped by an outsider, though police and university authorities stated the claims were unconfirmed and false rumors.
Police registered an FIR, formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the allegations, and deployed personnel to control the situation. Meanwhile, LPU suspended regular classes for 10 days, postponed mid-term exams, and urged students to remain peaceful.
The demonstrations escalated into widespread vandalism, arson, vehicle burning, and highway blockades on routes including the Chandigarh-Amritsar and Ludhiana-Jalandhar stretches. Videos also showed crowds entering a campus mall and taking items.
