Key Questions Answered
Bitchat is an offline, decentralized peer-to-peer messaging app launched by X co-founder Jack Dorsey. It allows users to communicate without the internet, cellular networks, or SIM cards.
The app utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Bluetooth mesh networking technology to connect nearby devices directly. Messages are relayed step-by-step from one phone to another across a chain of devices, bypassing the need for a central server.
India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) ordered the removal of Bitchat under Section 69A of the IT Act, citing national security concerns. Authorities raised worries that its decentralized, offline nature could be misused during internet shutdowns or protests.
