Tigress Arrives in Buxa: Roars to Return, Royal Bengal Tiger Population Expected to Grow
  • •A three-year-old tigress from Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar is being released in Buxa Tiger Reserve.
  • •In the eighties, Buxa had 10-12 tigers, but their roars were no longer heard.
  • •State forest officials selected this tigress after receiving a green signal from the central forest ministry.
  • •The tigress was flown in a special Air Force plane and then transported by road to Buxa, kept in an enclosure for acclimatization.
  • •Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari, Union Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav, and State Forest Minister Manoj Oraon will be present for the release.

Key Questions Answered

The tigress had to be subdued with a tranquilizer dart inside the enclosure because her radio collar was not functioning properly.

The state plans to have her mate with male tigers coming from the nearby forests of Bhutan or Assam, thereby increasing the population of Royal Bengal Tigers in Buxa through breeding.

The three-year-old tigress was brought from the Valmiki Tiger Reserve located in West Champaran, Bihar.
