Key Questions Answered
The deceased Bengali mountaineer was Dhruvajyoti Guha, a resident of Krishnanagar in Nadia who had been living in Germany for about ten years. He died alongside his companion, Nepalese citizen and mountain guide Phursemba Sherpa, when an avalanche struck near Camp 3.
After losing contact on Saturday night, a rescue team of four Sherpas was sent to search for the climbers. Their bodies were eventually discovered buried under a nearly seven-foot-thick layer of snow near Camp 3 after their tent was crushed by the avalanche.
According to the expedition agency's head Mohan Lamsal, the fatal accident occurred because Dhruvajyoti and his guide pushed forward from Camp 2 toward Camp 3 despite worsening weather and heavy snowfall. While another team of six mountaineer climbers wisely chose to retreat to safety, the duo continued upward in a hurry and were caught in a snowstorm on Saturday night.
