Key Questions Answered
The FSDA imposed an immediate ban on the manufacture, storage, and sale of inedible fat products sold as 'Puja Ghee' in Uttar Pradesh to protect public health during upcoming festivals. Additionally, writing 'ghee' or 'ghee for worship' on non-consumable packets has been banned, and it is now mandatory to print 'Unfit for human consumption' in Hindi and English with a black cross.
Because the appearance, color, smell, packaging, and presentation of inedible worship products closely resemble edible market ghee, consumers often mistakenly use them for eating and drinking. Banning the same brand name prevents consumer confusion between edible ghee and chemical-laden worship products.
During the statewide campaign, authorities seized 20,924 kg of adulterated and irregular food items valued at approximately Rs 66.87 lakh, collected 176 samples, and suspended the licenses of two traders. Violating the new rules leads to stock seizure and the suspension of food licenses or registrations.
