Following the coastal region's Tulu language being granted the status of the state's second additional official language, the SDPI submitted a letter to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar demanding similar official recognition for Urdu.

The SDPI demanded that Urdu receive official status, gradually become an administrative language, be used for applications and service information in government offices, see vacant teaching posts filled, and receive increased funding for literature and culture.
