RBI MPC Meeting Begins: Will Repo Rate Hike Impact Loans, EMIs, and FDs?
  • •The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting has commenced, lasting three days.
  • •Discussions will cover inflation, economic growth, and financial stability, with decisions announced on Wednesday.
  • •Despite a long period of unchanged repo rates, speculation of a hike intensifies due to inflation and rising crude oil prices.
  • •Experts predict a 25 basis point repo rate increase, which would lead to higher loan interest rates and EMIs.
  • •Conversely, an increase in the repo rate could lead to higher FD interest rates, benefiting investors.

Key Questions Answered

Nearly 60 percent of economists in a Reuters survey predict a 0.25 percent repo rate hike, which would bring the rate to 5.50 percent. Additionally, SBI Research and Japanese brokerage Nomura suggest the RBI might increase the repo rate by 25 basis points to address inflation, crude oil prices, and liquidity shortages.

If the repo rate increases, banks may pass on the additional borrowing costs to customers, leading to higher interest rates and increased EMIs for home loans, car loans, and personal loans. On the other hand, banks might also increase fixed deposit (FD) interest rates to attract deposits, giving investors an opportunity to earn higher returns.

Speculation about an interest rate hike has intensified due to rising inflation, crude oil prices remaining above $100, and the depreciation of the rupee. Geopolitical tensions, global market risks, and a current account deficit that is not fully compensated by the capital account surplus are also increasing pressure on the economy.
