Key Questions Answered
India currently has nearly one crore wealthy households served by only 15,000 to 20,000 relationship managers, driven by emerging wealth segments like ESOPs, SMB owners, and GCC employees. Additionally, younger investors are participating heavily, with investors under 30 accounting for 38% of the investor base in mid-2026 compared to 23% in fiscal year 2019.
Industry experts note that SEBI is encouraging the investment sector to transition from acting like mere product distributors to functioning like doctors who provide holistic advice. This shift addresses behavioral gaps in retail investing, moving households away from chasing past performance and toward goal-based diversified portfolios.
Fixed income is currently highly underpenetrated in India, with only 2% of the country's 22.5 crore demat holders holding fixed income products despite economic growth. However, industry experts predict that with proper expert handholding and guidance, this penetration rate could increase to between 15% and 20% within two years.
