Key Questions Answered
A delegation of former civil servants and citizens is visiting the Election Commission of India to submit a People's Chargesheet and Notice of Impeachment against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This move follows intense political and civil society criticism over the Special Intensive Revision exercise and allegations of unilateral decision-making.
The Supreme Court issued notice to the Centre, the ECI, Gyanesh Kumar, and the other two Election Commissioners on pleas alleging that Kumar made decisions on behalf of the poll panel without the concurrence of Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. While declining an interim order to suspend Kumar, Chief Justice Surya Kant stated the court would also examine records to determine who made changes to Form 6.
Reports revealed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi objected at least 14 times over a ten-month period to decisions and orders regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls issued without their knowledge. These objections involved voter registration Form 6 changes and the centralisation of electoral-roll systems.
