Can Oman's Sohar Port Help India Bypass the Strait of Hormuz?
  • •India relies on the Persian Gulf for over 60% of its crude oil imports, making the Strait of Hormuz a critical chokepoint for energy security.
  • •Oman's Sohar Port, located outside the Strait of Hormuz, offers India a strategic alternative to mitigate risks from regional disruptions.
  • •Sohar Port provides operational advantages like avoiding high insurance premiums and risks associated with navigating the Strait of Hormuz.
  • •The India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) enhances Sohar's appeal by offering zero-duty access for most Indian exports.
  • •While Sohar cannot fully replace the Persian Gulf's capacity, it serves as a crucial bypass during crises, connecting to GCC markets via overland routes.

Key Questions Answered

Situated safely outside the Strait of Hormuz on the Gulf of Oman, Sohar allows vessels sailing from Indian ports like Mumbai and Mundra to reach Omani shores without entering the narrow passage, avoiding high war-risk insurance premiums and regional bottlenecks. Cargo can then be trucked overland via modern highways into GCC markets.

The India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which entered into force on June 1, 2026, eliminated import tariffs on 98.08 percent of Oman's tariff lines. This grants immediate zero-duty access to roughly 99.4 percent of Indian exports by value, removing baseline 5 percent import duties on engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and agricultural products.

Spanning over 4,500 hectares, Sohar features four specialized clusters offering plug-and-play infrastructure: a logistics and supply chain hub, a metals and mining cluster hosting steel and rare earth metal facilities, a petrochemicals and energy cluster with refining and chemical production, and a food and agro-logistics cluster housing strategic grain reserves.
