Key Questions Answered

The Parliament endorsed the emergency because the federal government accused the previous provincial administration, led by Imran Khan's PTI party, of failing to tackle rising militancy and terrorism effectively.

Under Article 232, an emergency proclamation must be approved by both Houses of Parliament within 10 days. Meanwhile, a proclamation of governor's rule under Article 234 must go before a joint sitting of Parliament, expiring after two months unless extended, and cannot exceed six months.

PTI members staged a walkout from Parliament and opposed the emergency, while PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan outright rejected the proclamation and dismissed allegations that his party's government failed to fight terrorism.
