Key Questions Answered

The Government of India has decided to cap trade margins on non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs at 30 percent of the maximum retail price (MRP). This policy change applies to both branded and generic, domestic and imported, as well as patented and non-patented medicines.

The trade margin rationalisation is expected to reduce maximum retail prices by up to 70 percent and lead to estimated annual savings of Rs 2,500 crore for cancer patients and their families.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), which is the regulatory body controlling drug prices in India, issued the notification for this price intervention.
