Key Questions Answered
Indian pilot Smit Machchhar is being honoured for his heroism after he averted a mid-air disaster when his co-pilot attacked him inside the cockpit of a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door so passengers and crew could intervene and save the lives of around 174 to 180 people on board.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Captain Smit Machchhar's extraordinary courage and invited him, along with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to attend Israel's Independence Day celebrations and light a torch.
Captain Smit Machchhar explained that the attack began after his co-pilot requested to pray inside the cockpit, a routine request he respected before being struck from behind on the head. Despite sustaining severe injuries and blurred vision while the aircraft went into a steep descent, Machchhar mustered his remaining strength to open the cockpit door and allow intervention.
